When to visit Accident & Emergency at Hull Royal Infirmary or call 999
A&E departments assess and treat patients with serious injuries or illnesses. Only visit A&E or call 999 for life-threatening emergencies, such as:
loss of consciousness
acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
persistent, severe chest pain
severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
Many people go to Accident and Emergency when they could be treated just as well and probably quicker at a Minor Injury Unit. In Accident and Emergency staff must give priority to serious and life-threatening conditions, so if you go there with a minor injury you may have to wait longer to be seen. It is better to go to a minor injury unit,
Minor Injury Units
Throughout Hull and East Riding there are a number of minor injury units for less serious injuries, such deep cuts, eye injury, severe sprains, minor head injury, minor burns and scalds and less serious broken bones.
Less serious fractures
You don’t need an appointment to visit a minor injury unit. They are run by a team of highly qualified nurse practitioners with a lot of experience and expertise in the treatment of minor injuries. Children over the age of 18 months can also be treated at a minor injury unit.
